The Asawasi No1 of the Church of Pentecost in the Bompata area of Ashanti region has awarded a full scholarship to Mr Samuel Agyen Boahen, a 22-year-old senior high school (SHS) graduate who had financial challenges to continue his education after passing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with flying colours.
The sponsorship package covers tuition fees, living expenses, book allowance and dissertation/project allowance.
The scholarship drew attention to the plight of Samuel Agyen Boahen who studied General Science in SHS, scored better grades but was unable to continue his education due to his family’s financial distress.
SHS graduate Samuel with such good grades unable to further education appeals for assistance after getting an admission to enter into Nursing Training College.
He was given admission by the Korle-bu nursing training college to read General nursing.
Samuel’s dream was to become a medical doctor but with financial distress staring him in the face, he opted for nursing in order to get nurses’ allowance to cushion him. However, his parents could not afford the cost of nursing training college although he gained admission to the Korle-bu Nursing Training College.
The presiding Elder in charge of Asawasi Assembly 1, Elder Moses Kudjo in an interview with Silver FM's Akwadaa Nyame said his attention was drawn by the Asawasi Assembly 1 scholarship board on Samuel’s situation of how a brilliant boy was losing her desired dream of becoming a medical doctor due to the inability of his parents to finance his education.
Elder Moses Kudjo said, he was so touched by the story and directed the board of trustees of the church to see how best they could help Samuel to realise his dream.
He said as one of the core values of the church was education and training, “we offer scholarships to our church members from SHS students who have gained admission to any of the public tertiary institution to study as well as Special Needs Education”.
Last two years, the scholarships board sponsor's about four JHS graduate to enter into SHS before the introduction of the free senior high school.
An excited Samuel expressed gratitude to the church and the elders and promised to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in him.
